Situated in the renowned Grazalema nature park, Montajaque village is a charming labyrinth of narrow streets and meandering alleys nestling almost unseen under the great rugged slopes of the Sierra de Juan Diego, home of eagles and kestrels and birds of prey, that tower behind it. The countryside around is full of walks of infinite variety and beauty. Just behind the apartment is the start of the trail that leads through the Hidden Valley, a lush green paradise filled with groves of olive and cork and mountain-oak. South of Montajaque, the Libar valley descends to the village of Benaojan with its little railway station and its magnificently restored Molino del Santo hotel and restaurant. Beyond, the valley narrows to a gorge, wide enough only for the Guardiano River and the Ronda-Algeciras railway line with the train called the Smuggler’s Express that plies through it. There is a spectacular walk that follows the banks of the river through the gorge to Estacion de Jimena de Libar, where the old railway station has been converted into an excellent restaurant, an hour away at the far end.
Though small and tucked away, Montajaque is nevertheless well-equipped, with village shops, banking facilities, cafes and restaurants serving local as well as more international fare. Good country roads connect to the world beyond. Fifteen minutes’ drive to the north-east is the historic town of Ronda with its mix of Moorish, Christian and Roman past. An hour to the south – a delightful drive through the white villages of the Genal Valley – is the Costa del Sol, and an hour further west Gibraltar and the old Arab town of Tarifa, gateway to Morocco and water-sport capital of Spain. Malaga, Gibraltar and Jerez airports are all less than two hours’ drive from the village.
